College Men’s Soccer Final – Roanoke 1, Guilford 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Drew Claytor’s (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) goal 10 minutes into the second half gave visiting Roanoke College a 1-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference soccer win at Guilford College Wednesday night.

The Maroons (10-3-1), ranked fifth in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III South Atlantic Rankings, remained unbeaten in league play (5-0-1) with their seventh win in eight matches. The victory gives Roanoke 16 points in ODAC contests, one better than second-place Eastern Mennonite University.

After a scoreless first half, Guilford controlled possession for the opening moments of the second half. Roanoke broke the tie in the 55th minute when Peyton Lambert put a long throw in to the box. Chris Conover tapped it with a single touch across to Claytor, who banged it home for his second goal of the season.

The tally proved the Greensboro native’s second game-winner as the Maroons and Quakers remained scoreless the rest of the way.

Guilford goalie Peter Truitt turned away the best scoring chance of the game’s final 35 minutes when he deflected Claytor’s 64th-minute penalty kick off the crossbar. The save kept Guilford within a goal, but the while the Quakers controlled possession, they mustered few quality shots on goal.

The Maroons held a 14-12 edge in shots and took three of the game’s five corner kicks. Roanoke goalie Avery Makel made three stops for his fourth shutout of the year. Truitt finished with three saves for the Quakers.

Guilford visits league-rival Washington and Lee University Saturday (10/15) at 2:30 p.m.
