GREENSBORO, N.C. – Carmen Graves’ (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) unassisted goal in the 16th minute gave visiting Roanoke College a 1-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer win at Guilford College Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman Carolyn Sarbacher had six saves and the Quakers (9-7-2, 4-4-2 ODAC) twice hit the crossbar in Sarbacher’s fourth shutout of the year. The Maroons improved to 11-4-1 overall (7-3 ODAC) with their second straight league win.
Guilford got some early pressure, which resulted a Jaclyn Nucci shot off the crossbar in the fifth minute and three Sarbacher saves in the first 13 minutes.
Roanoke scored at the 15:02 mark when Maya Kantor hit a free kick from approximately 40 yards out. The ball deflected off of Nucci’s head and over oncoming Guilford keeper Amy Baker to Graves, who headed the ball into an empty net from eight yards out. The tally marked her team-leading sixth of the season.
The Quakers had another scoring chance midway through the first half when a Bri Eilman free kick from 25 yards away glanced off the cross bar and out of bounds.
Neither team mustered many quality scoring chances in the second half, although Guilford played the final 10 minutes with an advantage as Roanoke’s Jamie Johnston was sent off with a red card. Despite the edge, the Quakers managed only one shot for the rest of the game.
Guilford held a 10-9 advantage in shots and Roanoke had four of the game’s seven corner kicks. Baker finished with two saves in goal for Guilford.
The Quakers close the regular season this Saturday (10/22) when they host league-rival Eastern Mennonite University at 4:30 p.m. in the Armfield Athletic Center.
