Greensboro College Men’s Soccer Falls to #2 Christopher Newport

The Pride had been unbeaten at home prior to Saturday’s season finale and they hoped to carry that momentum into a major upset of nationally-ranked Christopher Newport, but the Captain’s offense was just too much for Greensboro to handle. CNU started the scoring in the 15th minute and finished the game with a 7-0 victory. Greensboro has now finished their regular season games and will carry the 4th seeded into the conference tournament after finishing 3-3 in USA South play.

Caleb Lewis scored the opening goal at the 14:49 mark and Steven Farmer added to the tally 13 minutes later, but The Pride clamped down on defense and held the Captains scoreless the rest of the half. Sophomore goalkeeper Woody Wilder, who had played every minute for Greensboro this season had a scary moment late in the half when he collided with a Captain’s player, but he made the save and would finish out the half in goal.

Tyler Kuhn would take Wilder’s place to start the second half, but he had no more luck stopping the high powered attack of Christoper Newport. The Captains tacked on five more goals in the second half, each by a different player.

The Captains outshot Greensboro 24-8 and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Captain’s goalkeeper Justin Wolfe finished the game with five saves, while Wilder recorded one in the first half and Kuhn tallied four in the second.

The USA South tournament will begin Tuesday, November 1st. First round match-ups will be announced early next week.
