Former NY Yankee All-Star Bobby Richardson to Speak at Charlotte Church November 20

CHARLOTTE, NC- Former NY Yankee All-Star Second Baseman Bobby
Richardson will talk about his sports career and share his Christian testimony at
Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte at 8 a.m., Sunday, November 20.

Richardson played 12 fruitful seasons at a time when the Yankees won American League
pennants in nine of his first 10 years. He played in 1,400 games and was the MVP of
the 1960 World Series.the first and only time a losing player has been so named. He
still holds the record for playing in 30 consecutive World Series games and he holds
World Series records for RBIs and hits. The Sumter, SC native also holds the record
for RBIs in a single Series game.

Richardson was runner-up to popular teammate Mickey Mantle in the voting for the
American League MVP in 1962. He won five consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove awards and
was a member of seven AL all-star teams.

During his time with the Yankees, Richardson was considered the “straight arrow” in
the Yankees dugout, but oddly befriended Mantle, who had quite a different
reputation. Ultimately, Richardson served as a spiritual advisor to Mantle and spoke
at his funeral.

Richardson retired from baseball at the ripe old age of 31 and became head baseball
coach for the University of South Carolina baseball program. He took the Gamecocks
to the final game of the 1975 College World Series and paved the way for this team’s
current success. He subsequently coached baseball at Coastal Carolina University and
Liberty University.

He has spoken at Billy Graham Crusades and is a sought-after speaker across the
country, blending anecdotes and information about his playing and coaching career,
as well as his faith.
