It was back in either 1980 or 1981, right after Coach K came to Duke University and he brought his team to Greensboro and the Blue Devils played a Blue-White scrimmage in the Bob Sawyer Gym, over at Grimsley High School…..In proper attire, I don’t think the gym was even called the Bob Sawyer Gym at that early time, but that is what goes by in 2011…
Duke was there and Coach Mike Krzyzewski was just getting started, as the Duke head mens basketball coach and the gym at Grimsley wasn’t really packed, but you have to remember that back in that early day, you didn’t have Bobby Hurley, Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, Carlos Boozer, Alla Abdelnabby, Shane Battier, Jay Williams or the big names you see and hear about today….
Duke came to Greensboro and they weren’t playing in the sold-out Greensboro Coliseum….This was back in 1980 and the Blue Devils were playing in a half-filled Grimsley Senior High School gymnasium, with Blue Devils like Chip Engelland, Mike Tissaw, Tom Emma, Danny Meagher and Doug Neeley……..
The Devils have come a long way under the direction of Coach Mike Krzyzewski since that Saturday night Blue-White scrimmage, on the Grimsley campus, over off of Westover Terrace…..
