High School Football Saturday Morning Rewind:Page and Northern still in the hunt with Mallard Creek and D.J. Humphries coming to Greensboro and Nighthawks on the road again to Wilson Hunt

Only two teams from Guilford County left in the playoffs and that my friend is pretty good news, as you head to Round Four of the NCHSAA football action…..

Page will be at home next Friday night to take on the Mavericks from Mallard Creek….Mallard Creek(13-0) and thus another Charlotte-area team will come to town and this crew is unbeaten, just like Page is, but most of the state polls have had Mallard Creek at #1 all season long…..But at this stage of the year and with two teams that have yet to lose in 2011, how much difference can there be in the two squads when you reach Week 15 of the season?

Mallard Creek has the big nationally known lineman D.J. Humphries and he is supposed to the best in the entire state….D.J.(Demarcus) Humphries stands at 6’5/265 and has committed to attend Florida….Will be fun to see the big man and his Mavericks at Marion Kirby Stadium, on the Friday after Thanksgiving….Page took down a big name team and a big name man in Riley Ferguson on Friday night and it will be time to do it again, in Round Four…

Northern Guilford will get a return trip down to Wilson Hunt and the Nighthawks had success at Hunt in 2010….The Nighthawks tripped up the Warriors to win the 3-AA East Region Title and they will get a chance for a repeat performance in 2011….

As we metnioned that Page will have to keep all eyes on D.J. Humphries, Northern will need to be ready for Wilson Hunt’s Josh Joyner…..From Friday night in the Warriors’ win over Cardinal Gibbons:
Hunt (13-0) capitalized on the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders mistakes and sent a steady diet of running back Josh Joyner at the Crusader line. Joyner rushed for 172 yards and scored three touchdowns to power the Warriors past the Crusaders.

Northern got plenty of help themselves on Friday night, at Fayetteville Bryd, from Daniel Downing, T.J. Logan, Scooter Mooney and T.J. Ruff….Logan didn’t hit 100 yards rushing, but he combined for 147 yards in rushing and receiving…Daniel Downing did his usual steady job of leading the Nighthawks, in their 35-6 win over the Douglas Byrd Eagles…Tre Purcell got another fumble recovery, his 13th of the year and took it back all the way for a touchdown…..

We rewind again to the Page game and even though it only shows up for 84 yards, didn’t James Summers’ passing game look much better last night, than it did the week before against Northwest Guilford? Two TD’s by James, with both going to Orlando Hatfield and the one big key, NO Interceptions….Excellent pass to Brian Spain by James down to the one yard-line to set up a Pirate TD pass by Summers to Hatfield….Turned out to be a real big night for ‘Big Game James’, with 3 TD runs and 2 TD passes and James accounting for 5 TD’s…Again,, his passing game looked so much smoother last night than it did the week before and he went 7-16, but there were some real big grabs by the Page receivers, particularly those by Hatfield and Spain…..

Wild fumble by the Pirates when they were down around the Matthews Butler Bulldogs 11 or 15-yard line and the game tied up at 26-26, but that didn’t hurt the Pirates, they just picked up more steam and rolled on to victory…Big hit by Ed Britt and the fumble recovery by Will Henry and also the fumble recovery by Brian Spain on the kickoff to Butler was huge…..The Pirate defense shut down the Bulldogs’ offense in the second half and that gave the Pirate offense time to get cranking and that is exactly what they did and therefore the huge win…..

We’ll be talking more about the teams as next Friday’s games get nearer and until then we have coming up in Round Four:

3-AA…Northern Guilford(12-1) at Wilson Hunt(13-0)
4-AA…Mallard Creek(13-0) at Page(13-0)
