  1. Charlotte Christian wasn’t even top 5 in ncisaa 3a rankings. It wasn’t as big of a game as it seemed. Charlotte Christian is at a down year.

  2. Don’t be a hater bro. They have an ACC committed guard and are ranked as one of the best teams in Charlotte. They aren’t in the top 5 of 3a private because those teams are pretty dang good.

  3. I am not a hater. The 3a state rankings are as follows

    1.Christ School
    2. Greensboro Day School
    3. High Point Christian
    4. Ravenscroft
    5. Wesleyan

HPCA was supposed to win that game. That is being a realist not a hater. Most of the good Charlotte teams are either in public divisions or private 1a. Perhaps you should do some research before you make accusations.

  4. Supposed to win still doesn’t mean it isn’t a good win. And I was aware of the rankings and acknowledged they weren’t ranked in the top 5 because those teams are really good. Perhaps you should read a post before responding and do your own research

  5. I would still like you to show me how I am a hater. Showing Charlotte rankings that aren’t even accurate don’t say a thing. I know they can’t be accurate because United Faith isn’t even on the list. Also, Northside Christian is not the third best Charlotte team. Davidson Day is much better. I am going to assume that is from the Charlotte Observer or some similar source. Mine was straight from the NCISAA website. I am not saying HPCA isn’t good, I am saying that Charlotte Christian isn’t as good as they have been in the past. I see the top five schools in 3a being in a class above every other 3a school including Charlotte Christian, therefore, I don’t think it is a very big win. By the way, Veritas Christian Academy had a guy a few years ago that was signed with Clemson and Veritas was not very good. A D1 commit or even an ACC commit doesn’t automatically make a team good.

  6. We will just agree to disagree. Are they as good as last year? No. But they are still apparently pretty good, or at least some people think so. Wasn’t at the game, but I can reason with the fact that an up and coming program like HPCA would see this as a big win. You immediately downplaying it because of your personal opinion came across as “hating.” If you weren’t then so be it. That was the Observer poll who doesn’t include schools that reclass. Only point was that they are still pretty highly regarded. They beat a decent public school by 40 last week according to maxpreps, so they aren’t terrible. Moving on now. I don’t really have a dog in this fight.

  7. Reclassing is part of it. I think they should be included in any poll.. I don’t necessarily have an opinion on whether or not private schools schould be able to reclass, but as long as it is legal than any team that can reclass should be included. They are high schools as well. The ability to reclassify is the reason I don’t like having polls that include public and private. Not that public schools can’t be better than a private school that reclasses students, but a private school has a distinct advantage since they can reclass their players. I think that is why so many people are transfering out of public school.

  8. I don’t disagree. I think reclassing is a great thing for kids if they take advantage of it. People complain that it’s only about sports, but it really isn’t. It helps, but it also allows kids to grow up some. Even then , if sports is the kid’s ticket to college then why not reclass and maybe get some better options. It has killed public school basketball in this area, but this isn’t the only place it is going on.

  9. it almost seems like a nationwide epidemic. I think it gives public schools a disadvantage but they don’t have to play private schools in state tournaments so does it matter? I am fine with people reclassing but what I don’t like are the scholarships schools give to get players.

  10. Most of the private schools don’t give scholarships as they are not supposed to by rule. They can give financial aid. I have a relative at HPCA that is a good player there and trust me, he pays tuition to go there. The scholarship issue is a myth in regards to most schools. Others find a way to do it, but tuition is supposed to be paid one way or another. Most private schools, particularly Christian schools, wouldn’t have the funds to provide scholarships anyways.

  11. Reclassing is a good thing? I would like to know the percentage of players that reclass and go onto incredible careers. When I was in high school, I couldn’t wait to go to college. Taking another year of high school was the last thing I wanted to do. I believe the parents are the reason for the reclassing. In some cases, the kids need the academic help, but in most cases it is the parents holding onto the dream of their child getting a scholarship.

  12. Well Tom, if parents think reclassing is best for their child then so be it! If kids get a scholarship b/c of reclassing then that is ok. Options….options….options!

  13. Some kids start school at the age of six. I know for a fact kids were already two years older than most kids when they start kindergarten. The truth is, some kids try to reclass and they are already too old to do it. If private schools no longer allowed reclassing it would level the playing field. Most kids that reclass are probably not paying full tuition, so losing money is probably not a factor. A student can turn 19 on Sept 1 and still be allowed to play High School sports. The rule should be, if you are nineteen before the season starts you can not play. Prep school and Junior College will be available to the old heads.

  14. In response to the post by ehh above, United Faith might not be in the rankings because they were found guilty by the NCISAA of recruiting (yes, private schools to get in trouble for recruiting). I believe they are on two years probation and some other fairly harsh sanctions…..

  15. United Faith was not found guilty of recruiting. All NCISAA schools recruit at some level — academically, athletically, in the arts, etc.

What UFCA was found guilty of was ILLEGAL recruiting in violation of the rules established by the NCISAA.

Their UFCA headmaster sent a letter to a guy who makes a living bringing Eastern European kids to the US to enroll at schools to play basketball, assuring him that the departure of former coach Shaun Wiseman would not affect UFCA’s focus on basketball. Since this “agent” who was not a school official could then relay this message to the kids over in Europe, it was seen as a violation of the NCSAA rule that requires all prospective new student-athletes to contact the admissions office at any school before any effort is made to entice them to come to the school. The agent was effectively acting on behalf of UFCA, “forward-contacting” kids to get them interested in UFCA.

Of course, at Oak Hill Academy, that paragon of integrity, this would be business as usual.

  16. GDS has been reclassing and hand picking players for years. imagine if you were a high school coach and you had major input if a kid was coming to your school to play basketball? Not only that, you could reclass kids when teams like Dudley could not. This means you are coaching the kids that you “want” to coach. It is absurd to believe GDS didn’t have an advantage for years…..Now GDS is not the only show in town. GDS has a good coach, but put him at a public school that has restrictions and see what happens.

  17. the private school age limit is harsher than the public school age limit. 19 before august 15th versus 19 before October 15th I believe. So the kids are the same age if not younger than the public. Basically a difference in being held back as a 3rd grader (or any other pre-HS grade) and reclassing in HS. Same thing

  18. “GDS has a good coach, but put him at a public school that has restrictions and see what happens.”

What would happen is that he would probably get more out of those kids than most of the public school coaches in Guilford County — or North Carolina, for that matter. Experience and success do count for something in the mind of a teenager. Not a self-absorbed, me-first teenager, mind you, but I would bet there are plenty of team players in the public schools who, if Freddy Johnson walked in the door as their head coach at the beginning of the school year, would work their tails off getting ready for the season and be highly optimistic about their chances for success.

You may not realize it, but GDS has had several teams in the last 10-15 years that have greatly overachieved relative to their talent level. When you can get a group of teenagers to run motion for 7 minutes, 45 seconds during the second or third quarter of an elimination game in the Little 4 — because your team is over-matched athletically — and then protect that lead and win the game (as they did against Smith several years back), then you know what you are doing.

Freddy’s teams are always greater than the sum of their parts.

  19. He can have a tem run motion for 7 minutes, 45 seconds because he has hand picked kids. Do you think that has anything to do with it? He doesn’t have to deal with head cases.

  20. Any varsity coach anywhere worth his salt has hand-picked kids and can do away with the head cases.

  21. Who wants to see 7minutes and 45 seconds of pass and cut? Freddy’s style wouldn’t fit at a public school. he has been smart to stay where he is all these years. Once he locks a kid in by re-classing him the kid can’t go back to public school no matter how much he wants to. They have to do it his way or ride the pine. I wonder how happy the kid from dudley is scoring 3 points a game now at GDS.

  22. I agree y. You couldn’t pay me to go see a game like that. Who cares if you can hold the ball for over seven minutes? That is a good reason why boys basketball should have a shot clock.
