Carolina CATS Maul Competition, Move Up Power Rankings

(North Carolina) – Our Carolina CATS had a great weekend tearing up the competition, all the way to the top power of rankings according to ABALive.com. The Carolina Jaguars are ranked 23rd, Carolina Cheetahs are ranked 14th and Carolina Cougars are ranked 8th.

The now #14 Ranked Carolina Cheetahs started the season off great with their season opener on November 19th win against the Lynchburg Legends (115 – 106). Kellen Brand led with 24 points, followed by Chris Woods with 23 points. In a back to back home game, on November 20th game the Cheetahs took a loss from the NOVA Wonders (110 – 117) in a game that was controlled throughout the day by the Cheetahs. The Cheetahs were led in scoring by Damien Goodman’s 22 pts. They won against the Johnson City Mad Hatters (117 – 104) on November 26th and the following day defeated the Fayetteville Flight (113 – 107). A late 3 point basketball by Chris Woods broke open close game between the Carolina Cheetahs and Fayetteville Flight.

The #8 ranked Carolina Cougars are coming off a solid win against the Portsmouth Cavaliers 103-98. “We have a strong unit,” says Head Coach Eric Vaughn. “Recognition is great but it’s early and we have a long road ahead to improve on our shortcomings.”

The Cougars had 5 players in double digits with Montez Downey dropping 33 points with seven 3 – pointers. Other top scorers included Devin Mooring with 17pts and Shelton Carter with 16 pts. Taron Downey had a double with 14 pts and 10 assists. The boards were under control with the clean up men Damien Brown, Q. Waddell, Paul Davis all had 10 rebounds. In addition, Davis added 11 pts and 2 blocks to his stats.

The 3-1 Cheetahs travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina, to face the Flight this Saturday. Then, they return to Greensboro on Sunday, December 4th when they play the West VA Blazers for their next home game. All home games are at UNC-Greensboro’s Fleming Gymnasium (1350 Walker Avenue, Greensboro, North Carolina 27402) against West VA Blazers at 5pm.

The 3-1 Cougars are to hit the road this weekend to play the Northern Virginia Wonders on Saturday Dec. 3 in Virginia. They return home on Sunday to take on the #22 ranked Richmond Elite at NC Wesleyan’s Everett Gymnasium (3400 N Wesleyan Blvd | Rocky Mount, NC 27804), Sunday, December 4th at 5pm.

The 3-2 Jaguars’ started the season a little rocky but after a 144 – 105 win against the No 24 Lynchburg Legends, things are looking up. Paul Wright led all scorers for the Jaguars with 24 points, while Jon Moore dropped five 3-pointers to add 22 to the blowout of the Legends. They travel to Virginia on Saturday, Dec 3rd to play the Lynchburg Legends. Their next home game is Sunday, December 4th at the Durham School of the Arts Gymnasium (400 North Duke Street, Durham, North Carolina 27701) against the Myrtle Beach Warriors at 5pm.
