RAGSDALE DROPS TWO TO WESTERN GUILFORD ON THE HARDWOOD LAST NIGHT
GIRLS:
Western Guilford travelled to Ragsdale last night and the two teams played a
fairly even first quarter with the Lady Hornets taking a 16 – 14 lead. That
was the highlight of the night for the Lady Tigers as Western opened the
second quarter on a 10 – 0 run. After Ally Darnell broke the streak for
Ragsdale with a bucket, the Lady Hornets went on another 9 – 0 run to make
the score 35 – 16. The Lady Tigers closed out the half with 7 straight
points to cut the lead to 12 at 35 – 23, but that was as close as they would
get as Western went on to record the 55 – 38 win.
Senior Brittany Clency was the difference maker for the Lady Hornets. She
opened the game by connecting on three treys in the first quarter as she
scored 11 points in the first eight minutes. She went on to record 5 three
pointers as part of her game high 26 points. Carnique Mark, a 6′ 1″ senior
center contributed 7 points and 14 rebounds as eight different players got
in the scoring column for the 4 – 0 Lady Hornets.
Ragsdale was led by senior Ally Darnell with 12 points. Senior guard Emma
Sonricker was also in double figures with 10 points as nine different Lady
Tigers scored in the game. Ragsdale drops to 1 – 3 on the season.
BOYS:
In a game that went back and forth all night, Western Guilford found a way
to put Ragsdale away late in the game to come away with a 58 – 49 win.
Ragsdale led 8 – 6 after one quarter in a game that started slowly with both
teams struggling to put the ball in the basket. With the Tigers up 12 – 10
two minutes into the second quarter, the Hornets Aaron Woodard hit a three
pointer to give Western their first lead of the night at 13 – 12 and they
never trailed again.
The game was tied five more times from that point on, but Ragsdale could
never get the lead and Western couldn’t get a lead larger than five points
into the final quarter. With the score tied at 39 at the 5:43 mark in the
fourth, Western went on an 8 – 0 run. Ragsdale again cut the lead to 3
points but Western closed out the game with another 9 – 3 run to get the
win.
Western got 17 points, all on the inside from their 6′ 7″ senior Jeffrey
Mosley. Mosley is averaging 20 points a game through the first four games.
He plays a very controlled game and has excellent moves around the basket.
The Hornets also got 17 from senior guard Tariq Watkins who hit three treys
in the third quarter. Senior guard Aaron Woodard was also in double figures
with 15. Western Guilford evened their record at 2 – 2 with the win.
Ragsdale, despite having a size disadvantage against the Hornets, did a good
job on the boards and defending the inside game but just could not get a big
stop and a basket when they needed it. Junior guard Bryan Rouse led the
Tigers in scoring with 18 points, 10 of them coming in the fourth quarter as
he tried to lead his team back. Sophomore point guard James Stepp had 9
points and junior forward Jarratt Holland chipped in with 8 as the Tigers
fell to 1 – 2.
Ragsdale is at home tonight to take on the Southern Guilford Storm.
It was very sloppy play with poor guard desicion making and ball handling. On the poistive side, the first year coach did make a few halftime adjustments and his kids played hard!
Best overall defense I have seen from the Western girls and boys in recent years….
