College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 82, Meredith 66

RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore Gabby Oglesby (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) poured in a career-high 26 points and teammate Jazlyn Gibbs (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford (USC-Aiken)) added 22 in Guilford College’s 82-66 win at Meredith College Saturday afternoon. The nonconference victory marked the Quakers’ (7-2) sixth straight, Guilford’s longest winning streak since 2002-03.

Guilford limited the Avenging Angels (2-3) to 33.8 percent shooting from the floor and converted 18 Meredith turnovers into 25 points. Oglesby had 16 points and teammate Morgan King (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover) added 12 of her 16 points in the first half as the Quakers took a 45-34 halftime lead.

Meredith’s Rah’nika Jones (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef Senior) opened the second-half scoring with a jumper that drew the hosts to within nine points. Guilford answered with a King bucket and the first of Gibbs’ five second-half three-pointers to restore a 50-36 lead. Meredith pulled no closer than 10 points for the rest of the game.

Oglesby made 13-of-18 shots from the floor and grabbed 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. King also grabbed 11 boards for her third double-double this year. Junior Jaclyn Nucci (Gambrills, Md./South River (Anne Arundel C.C.)) contributed 11 points, five rebounds and a career-high five steals. Junior Brittany Atwater (Durham, N.C./Ravenscroft) did not score, but she dished out a game- and career-high 11 assists and had seven rebounds. Her 11 helpers mark the third-highest single-game total in school history. Guilford held a 54-47 edge in rebounds and corralled 22 offensive caroms that led to 21 second-chance points.
Meredith’s Megan Rahn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) registered a double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs, and added a team-best five assists. Jones finished with 14 points and 14 boards.

Guilford visits Hollins University Jan. 3 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest.
