College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 61, Maryville (Tenn.) 48

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College held visiting Maryville (Tenn) College scoreless for the final eight-and-a-half minutes of Saturday’s 61-48 men’s basketball win.

The Quakers (8-2) used sound defense and timely shooting to overcome an early eight-point deficit and win for the eighth time in 10 games. Maryville (6-4) made six of its first eight shots and opened an eight-point lead 5:28 into the game. Guilford’s Josh Pittman scored eight of his game-high 11 points in the first half and teammate Matt McCarthy buried two three-pointers off the bench, which helped the Quakers to within 33-31 at halftime.

Guilford opened the second half with a 7-0 run and took the lead for good on a Carson Sullivan free throw two minutes into the period. The Scots managed just six-of-23 field-goal shooting in the second half and missed all 14 shots (11 field goals, 3 free throws) in the final 8:41. The Quakers outscored Maryville, 10-0, in that time.

The Quakers yielded a season-low 48 points and made Maryville their opponent to shoot less than 40 percent from the field (36.5%). Guilford outrebounded the opposition for the ninth time this year (36-30) and forced 18 turnovers, which led to 25 Quakers’ points.
Pittman added a game-high five assists, three rebounds, two blocks and a steal to his 11 points. McCarthy finished with 10 points off the bench and fellow reserve Gene Efird contributed a career-high nine markers in 10 minutes. Sullivan (8 points) shared game-high rebounding honors (7) with teammate Justin Stafford (7 points).

Milton Stanley’s 10 points led Maryville, which managed just 15 second-half points. Wesley Lambert finished with nine and Oscar Butler had six points and a team-best six rebounds.
