Guilford Women’s Basketball Dominates Final Five Minutes to Rally Past Randolph-Macon

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College overpowered visiting Randolph-Macon College in the final five minutes of the second half to defeat the visitors, 90-75, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Friday night. Sophomore Gabby Oglesby tied a career-high with 26 points, and notched a new personal best with seven blocked shots to go along with her 10 rebounds. It was the first win for the Quakers against the Yellow Jackets since 2003, breaking a stretch of 18 consecutive losses.

Guilford (8-2, 5-0 ODAC) built an early seven-point lead over the first 10 minutes of the half behind the shooting of Jaclyn Nucci (six points) and Brittany Drew (nine points) to go along with the low-post play of Oglesby.

However Randolph-Macon (4-6, 2-3 ODAC) kept the game close and surged ahead in the final three minutes of the first period to steal momentum and take a 41-37 halftime lead. The Yellow Jackets were led by Taylor Wieczorek, who scored 13 of her 15 points in the first half, and Maggie Roy, who contributed nine points in the first stanza.

The Yellow Jackets maintained their slim lead through the first nine minutes of the second-half, before a three-pointer by the Quakers’ Kayla Adams tied the score at 52. The game see-sawed back and forth over the next six minutes with each team taking four-point leads. Jazlyn Gibbs’ trifecta broke the stalemate and ignited a 23-6 run for Guilford to end the game.

Guilford rookie Drew finished with 13 points and three assists, and teammate Brittany Atwater finished with 11 points and two assists. The Quakers shot 49.2 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free-throw line, including 10-11 shooting down the stretch.

Randolph-Macon had balanced performances from Wieczorek, Roy (17 points), Kellie Cortina (13 points), and Sarah Parsons (11 points). Cortina also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. The Yellow Jackets finished the game shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from the free throw line.

Guilford returns to action Saturday (1/7) hosting ODAC-rival Virginia Wesleyan College at 4:00 p.m.
