  1. I think private schools like Bishop McGuinness that can hand out scholarships for basketball players should be forced to play one division higher or they should get their own conference so they go head to head with schools like Oak Ridge Military or FS Country Day.

Bishop McGuinness winning 6 titles in a row is an achievements but deserves a “*” next to the titles because they recruit and only compete against 1-A public schools… that cannot recruit or hand out scholarships…in the state tournament.

  2. No it’s not. I personally know of two at Bishop and one at Greensboro Day. They may not not specifically called it a sports scholarship, but their tuition is waived becasue they can play ball.

  3. I am only referring to Bishop. Since they play in a conference with public schools, they have to abide by the same rules. The other private schools can do whatever they want.

  4. I know a parent on an AAU program that is run by the girls coach. She applied at Bishop to get “tuition assistance”. Both parents are doing quite well in their jobs. Doubt they would qualify just based on income. The Bishop girls coach endorsd their application with a letter. If that’s not a sports scholarship, what is?

  5. They are not supposed to be able to do that. It sounds like somebody needs to look into this. You should forward this info over to the NCHSAA.

  6. My personal feeling is that private schools should not be allowed to play in the Public School play-off system. I know schools that do this are not suppose to offer “Athletic” scholarships but they can recruit and they can get people from “out of district.” This cannot be properly governed. Even if they abide by this these rules, they have an advantage in pulling in kids because of other privaledges such as college attention.

Start another bracket for only private schools.

  7. According to what “McFly” is saying, Guilford Co schools should never play Forsyth Co schools or any private school. Forsyth Co players can switch to schools out of their district which is the same flexibility for any private school. Bishop was accepted into the regular public school of play because they must follow specific rules. People on the outside keep thinking that these schools are recruiting players and that is just not the case. Current parents and players at these schools recruit future students and players. Once a student and/or parents show an interest and/or apply to these private schools, then the coaches can get involved (by the way, this is the same basic process that the public schools are suppose to be following).

  8. Agreed but how many of those student athletes whose parents couldn’t afford the $5k semester would go to the private school?

It’s not a level playing field to up against a public school of the same size. Make them ply up a bracket or give them their own division for state titles.
