Strong Defensive Effort Not Enough as Greensboro College Women’s Basketball Falls to CNU

The Pride held Christopher Newport to 29% shooting from the floor and just 3-15 from behind the arc, but could not overcome their own shooting woes, as they lost their second game in a row, 48-42. Greensboro, Ferrum, and Christopher Newport stood in a three way tie for the top seed in the conference entering the day, but The Pride’s loss leaves the Captains tied with just Ferrum.

It took nearly a minute for the game’s opening basket, and both teams traded buckets early on. Greensboro pulled ahead 6-5 at the 16:47 mark, on two free throws by Danielle Duncan, but it was the last lead The Pride would hold. The Captains scored the next seven points and went on a 23-6 run to grab a solid lead in the first half, leading 28-14 at the break.

Ever resilient, The Pride fought back into the game in the second half. After a lay-up and foul shot by Tia Perry, Greensboro went on an 11-0 run, cutting the lead to six, 31-25, at the 14:06 mark. Despite a hard fought effort, The Pride could not close the rest of the gap and the Captains began to pull away late, leading by ten with under a minute remaining.

The Pride gave it one last, desperate effort, however, running the full court press and forcing several turnovers. Chevena Pickard forced a steal and made an easy lay-up, followed by another steal by Danielle Duncan. Pickard intercepted the inbounds pass again, and was fouled going to the basket. After making the first free throw, she missed her second and Camry Green grabbed the rebound, icing the game at 48-42.

Duncan led The Pride in scoring with 17, while Bianca Richburg posted another double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds. Andrienne Terrell grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists.
