College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 69, Emory & Henry 66

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Gabriel Lowder (Yadkinville, N.C./North Forsyth) scored a game-high h20 points and grabbed a personal-best nine rebounds in Guilford College’s 69-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over visiting Emory & Henry College Wednesday night.

The Quakers (12-5, 6-2 ODAC) beat the Wasps (8-8, 2-6 ODAC) for the second time in as many weeks to sweep the season series and win their third straight game. Guilford squeaked out a 58-57 decision at Emory & Henry Jan. 4.

Lowder scored 12 second-half points, which helped Guilford overcome a 27-26 halftime deficit. His third of four three-pointers opened the second-half scoring and sparked a 10-0 Guilford run. Lowder later added his second four-point play in as many games when he was fouled on a made trifecta and converted the free throw, opening a 47-35 Quakers’ edge with 12:33 remaining. Guilford made 11 of its first 15 second-half shots and shot 54.5 percent for the period.

Guilford junior Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, including eight from the foul line. He made four straight free throws in a single possession when he was fouled by Green while shooting, after which Green received a technical foul. Pittman made both technical free throws, followed by two off the shooting foul, which extended the Quakers’ edge to 61-41, their largest of the game.

Emory & Henry overcame a 14-0 deficit in the first four minutes and rallied to take a 27-26 halftime lead. The Wasps used aggressive defense to force Guilford into 18 percent shooting over the half’s final 16 minutes and led by as many as four after a 14-point shortfall.

Guilford sophomore Carson Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian (Pennsylvania)) had 10 points, five boards, four assists and two steals in 21 solid minutes. The starting backcourt of Lowder, Pittman and Sullivan combined for 45 of Guilford’s 69 points. Senior Brad Monroe (Asheboro, N.C./Eastern Randolph) and freshman Will Freeman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Richmond Senior (N.C.)) both contributed seven points apiece.

Freshman Damian Edwards (Boone, N.C./Watauga) led the Wasps with 12 points on four three-pointers. Classmate Tyler Driver (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) added nine points and six boards before fouling out.

The Quakers visit league-leading Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday (1/21) at 2:00 p.m. The Marlins are ranked second in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.
