GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team completed a clean 7-0 sweep of the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Friday, Jan. 20, at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro to earn its first win of the spring season.
The Phoenix first flexed its muscle in doubles action, as Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker won their second match of the season after recording an 8-2 decision over A&T’s Kenya Colbert and April Burrage. Earlier this week, Johnston and Jansaker topped UNC’s 43rd-ranked doubles team of Zoe De Bruycker and Laura Slater.
Viviana Stavreva and Katy Canada did not surrender a point in an 8-0 decision over Azeib Nigatu and Cayla Cross, while Maria Camara Ruiz and Kaylyn Smialek defeated Kimberly Stalling and Nianna Henry, 8-2, to give Elon the doubles point.
In singles action, Bryn Khoury (No. 1), Briana Berne (No. 3) and Canada (No. 5) each won without giving up a point in a trio of 6-0, 6-0 decisions. Khoury earned her first win of the season over N.C. A&T’s Cayla Cross, while Berne and Canada picked up their first wins of 2012 versus Azeib Nigatu and April Burrage, respectively.
At the No. 2 position, Elon’s Barbora Lazarova picked up a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Victorea Austin, while Camara Ruiz defeated Henry, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 4 position.
Smialek earned her second win of the day in impressive fashion, topping Colbert, 6-2, 6-1, to help lead the Phoenix to victory.
Elon returns to action on Jan. 27-28 for a pair of matches in Blacksburg, Va. The Phoenix takes on Radford on Friday, Jan. 27, before battling Virginia Tech a day later.
