Guilford Sweeps Greensboro in Men’s & Women’s Tennis

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s tennis teams swept cross-town rival Greensboro College Tuesday afternoon at the McMichael Centennial Class Courts. The Quakers’ men claimed an 8-0 darkness-shortened win, while the Guilford women prevailed, 9-0.

The Quakers’ men (2-2) lost just four points in sweeping the three doubles’ matches. Guilford yielded two points in winning the first three singles contests as Tyler Mercier and Turner Votipka both claimed 6-0, 6-0 decisions. The sixth singles match between Guilford’s Ben Nelson and Johnathan Deming was not completed due to darkness.

Guilford’s women (2-0) got off to a good start with a pair of 8-0 doubles victories. Meredith Kelly took the Quakers’ Haley Andrews to three sets before the Quakers’ freshman prevailed, 4-6, 7-5 (7-6), 10-5. Kim Kleimeier also used three sets to knock off Greensboro’s Brittany Cates, 6-0, 2-6, 10-3.

Both Guilford tennis teams are back in action Sunday (2/19) when they open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Randolph-Macon College.
