Double-Double from Woods-Morrow Leads Randolph College Past Roanoke 79-72

SALEM, VA – Randolph College junior Colton Hunt (Whittier, NC/Smoky Mountain) scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and the WildCats survived a late rally from Roanoke College to capture a 79-72 win in conference men’s basketball action from the C. Homer Bast Center Wednesday evening.

The win combined with a loss tonight by Lynchburg College against Virginia Wesleyan College means Saturday’s contest for Randolph at LC could be for the fifth spot in the ODAC standings, pending on other outcomes around the conference. The fifth spot receives a bye in the league tournament opening round, which would take place Tuesday night at the higher seed.

Points in the early going were tough to come by, as the squads combined for just nine points over the first seven minutes of the contest. The game would go back and forth over the first stanza, with the WildCats (12-12/7-8 ODAC) eventually taking a one-point lead into intermission at 27-26.

After the halftime break scoring really picked up as the WildCats posted 52 points in the second stanza. The 52-point outburst tied for the most points in a half for Randolph all season. Three-point shooting in the second half was the difference, as Randolph buried seven from behind the arc. Hunt accounted for four of them.

Senior Derrick Woods-Morrow (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford) had a team-best 18 points along with 11 rebounds for the WildCats. He finished five-of-seven from the field and eight-of-10 from the charity stripe. The double-double was Woods-Morrow’s seventh of the season, which is second in the conference.

The WildCats shot 50 percent on the night, as first-year Zach Desgain (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) returned to his fantastic form with 17 points and five assists, shooting seven-of-11 on field goals.

Sophomore Mike Ehilegbu (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) had 17 points, including making four-of-eight from downtown and Hunt finished with 16 points before fouling out, grabbing five boards as well. The WildCats made 16 of their 25 shots from inside the arc, finishing at 64 percent on two-point shots.

Kwasi Amponsah had 19 points to lead all scorers for Roanoke (6-18/2-13 ODAC), while Jack Hamilton had 12 points and Logan Singleton added 11 points. Roanoke won the rebounding battle 40-29.

Randolph will head across town to take on rival Lynchburg Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the regular season finale for both teams from Turner Gymnasium.
