College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 70, Bridgewater 49

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Kayla Adams (Rural Hall, N.C./North Forsyth) scored 14 of her game- and career-high 16 points in the second half of Guilford College’s 70-49 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over visiting Bridgewater College Friday night.

Adams, a sophomore guard, had two free throws at halftime, but warmed up from three-point land in the second half when she connected on four of six shots from long range. Bridgewater trailed, 46-40, with just under eight minutes left, but Adams hit consecutive trifectas to start a 17-6 run that put the game away. She had 11 of the Quakers’ (19-5, 16-3 ODAC) points in the four-minute spurt.

Guilford sophomore Morgan King (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover) overcame early foul trouble to score 13 points and senior Jazlyn Gibbs (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford (USA-Aiken)) added 12 in the Quakers’ fourth straight win. Junior point guard Brittany Atwater chipped in four points, seven boards, eight assists and two steals. Sophomore Gabby Oglesby (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) had seven points and seven rebounds, plus four blocks that made her the Quakers’ career leader. With 115 blocks in 51 games, Oglesby moved past Jennie Keichline ’04, who set the previous standard (114) in a school-record 110 games from 2000-04.

Jenny Logan paced the Eagles (14-10, 10-9 ODAC) with 14 points, thanks to four-of-seven three-point shooting. Shannan Thorne added 10 for Bridgewater, which played minus Jessica Mullen. With the ODAC scoring leader and her 18 points per game sidelined, the Eagles managed just 29.3 percent shooting from the floor and were held to less than 50 points for just the third time this season.

Guilford’s win sets up an exciting final day of regular-season ODAC play. The Quakers host Eastern Mennonite University, which also has a 16-league record, at 4:00 p.m. Both Guilford and Eastern Mennonite trail ODAC leader Virginia Wesleyan College, who takes a 17-2 league mark into Saturday’s game at Roanoke College.
