SALEM, Va. – Guilford College’s Gabby Oglesby (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s (ODAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Year Award Wednesday at the league’s annual awards banquet. The sophomore center also garnered First Team All-ODAC recognition. Senior teammate Jazlyn Gibbs (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford (USC-Aiken)) won Second Team All-ODAC laurels for the second straight season.
Oglesby is the fourth Guilford student lauded with the ODAC’s top women’s basketball prize. Brenda Davis ’94 (1993, 1994) and Laura Haynes ’98 both won the honor twice (1995, 1998) and Arden Miller ’01 claimed the 2000 award. Oglesby is the first sophomore so honored since Randolph-Macon College’s Molly Ariail in 2008.
Oglesby leads the Quakers in scoring, rebounding, field-goal percentage and blocked shots (59). She tops the ODAC in blocks per game (2.4 bpg.) and stands third in the league in field-goal shooting (.509). Her 14.7 points per game average stands fifth in the conference and her 7.7 boards per outing is sixth. The ODAC’s Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 8, she has a team-high five double-doubles this year, four versus league foes.
Oglesby broke Guilford’s all-time blocks record Feb. 17 in her 51st career game. She now has 118 rejections, four better than the former standard, which was set in 110 contests. Oglesby broke another school record with seven blocks in a Jan. 6 win over Randolph-Macon and needs one rejection to break the school’s mark for blocks in a season she set last year.
Gibbs is Guilford’s 10th two-time All-ODAC performer after averaging 13.0 points per game and shooting better than 40 percent from three-point land. Her .402 three-point shooting percentage ranks second in the ODAC and 23rd in NCAA Division III through games of Feb. 19. She is third in the league with 2.1 threes per game and also contributes 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per outing. Her 53 three-pointers this year rank seventh in school history. Gibbs has 18 games with 10 or more points and became Guilford’s 16th career 1,000-point scorer this year. She enters the ODAC Tournament ranked 12th all-time at Guilford with 1,046 career points.
Coach Stephanie Flamini’s Quakers posted a 19-6 regular-season record, their most wins since 2003. Guilford went 16-4 in the league and secured the third seed for this week’s ODAC Tournament at the Salem (Va.) Civic Center. The Quakers meet sixth-seeded Bridgewater College Thursday (2/23) in an 8:00 p.m. quarterfinal tilt.
Virginia Wesleyan College’s Stephany Dunmyer won the ODAC’s Coach of the Year Award and the Marlins’ Sarah Seipp was named the league’s top rookie. Becca Bolton of Washington and Lee University won the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for the second straight season.
