Elon Track and Field Finishes Fifth at SoCon Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Elon track and field team finished fifth in the 2012 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships after compiling 72.3 points out of the 17 scored events. The Phoenix finished with a total of six new school records and one title.

New school records were posted yesterday, Feb. 23, in day one of the championships in the 60-meter dash, 3,000-meter run and the pentathlon with Louise Prevoteau taking home the title in the pentathlon. The Phoenix set new program records today, Feb. 24, in the 4×400-meter relay, 5,000-meter run and weight throw.

The 4×400-meter relay team, comprised of Bria Bell, Veronica Leudke, Christine Pacewicz and Amy Salek, placed third with an Elon-record time of 3:49.14.

Salek placed third in the 400-meter dash finals after clocking a time of 55.78, while Bell took fifth with a time of 57.50. Salek and Bell placed seventh and eighth in the 200-meter dash finals after crossing the finish line in 25.32 and 25.35, respectively.

Luedke claimed seventh in the 60-meter hurdles finals with a time of 9.07, while Dana Cataldo also finished seventh in the 60m finals, clocking a time of 7.85.

Charlise Morgan set the new Elon record in the weight throw with a toss of 15.58m to earn second. Alyssa Girvin followed right behind in third with a throw of 15.36m.

Allyson Oram broke her own school record in the 5,000m with a time of 17:19.41 to finish seventh. Morgan Denecke claimed 11th with a time of 17:48.51, while Haylee Dawe earned all-freshman honors after clocking a time of 18:07.63 for 13th.

The Phoenix placed two in the top ten of the triple jump as Janelle McNeil took seventh with a leap of 36’4” and Luedke finished ninth after a jump of 36’1.5”. Claire Smith earned seventh in the pole vault after reaching a height of 11’1.75”.

Emily Tryon was the top finisher for the maroon and gold in the one-mile run with a time of 5:10.24. Pacewicz and Brennan McDavid also finished in the top 20 with times of 5:17.41 and 5:23.07 for 15th and 17th, respectively.

Appalachian State claimed the women’s team title with a total of 157.166 points. Western Carolina (113 points), Georgia Southern (92 points) and Samford (85 points) finished ahead of the Phoenix in second through fourth.

The Elon track and field team will begin the 2012 outdoor season on Friday, March 9, at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C.
