ELON, N.C. – The Elon women’s tennis team saw its six-match winning streak come to an end on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, as the No. 63-ranked UNC Wilmington Seahawks handed the Phoenix a 5-2 setback.
Elon falls to 8-3 on the year while UNCW improves to 5-4.
Frida Jansaker shined in both singles and doubles play for the Phoenix in the setback, as the sophomore claimed her sixth straight win in singles with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Alyssa Ritchie. In doubles, Jansaker and Jordan Johnston, who were previously nationally ranked at No. 43 until today, improved to 9-1 on the year after claiming an 8-6 win over Angie Sekely and Kelly Cameron.
The maroon and gold began the match by taking the doubles point, as Maria Camara Ruiz and Briana Berne registered an 8-3 victory at No. 3 over UNCW’s Casey Dashiell and Olga Blank.
But the Seahawks came back in singles action after Cameron topped Viviana Stavreva, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 to take a 2-1 lead following Bryn Khoury’s retirement at No. 2 singles.
After Jansaker helped Elon tie the match at 2-all in the No. 5 position, the ‘Hawks closed the match with three straight wins to secure the win.
Rookie Barbora Lazarova battled hard for the Phoenix at No. 3, but fell in three sets to UNCW’s Sekely, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.
Blank topped Johnston in the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 7-5, before Ruiz fell to UNCW’s Christina Riley, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6.
Elon returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts UNC Asheville at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
