Southeast Guilford Falcons ready to defend Metro 4-A Conference Title

The 2012 Lady Falcon softball team will kick off their season today against Smith.

The Lady Falcons are the 2011 Metro Conference Season Champions and will be a contender for that honor again this season. They lost only one senior – Aryn Laws to graduation last year and will have everyone else back this year. The main pitching duties will be handled by the 2011 Metro Conference Pitcher of the Year – Celeste Sheppard. Blair Bauer and Victoria Neese will also step in the circle when needed. The infield will be led by 2011 Metro Conference Player of the year – Senior Shortstop Brittany Vaughn.

The outfield will be as good and as fast as any in the state with Ashley Smith, Kara Shutt and Amari McNeil. They are primarily a base hitting team but have several that can take it out at any time like Senior Ashley Hawks, Junior Brianna Webb and Freshman Emma Strouth. In 2011 the Lady Falcons put six players on the All-Conference team along with Celeste Sheppard, Kara Shutt, Brittany Vaughn and Brianna Webb taking All-State honors. Head Coach Shannon Cowart is very excited about this team and feels that they can go far into the playoffs. She will be assisted by Lindsay Russell who was a standout player at Southern Alamance and Lenoir Rhyne College.

New to the coaching staff is pitching coach Elizabeth Montemurro. Coach M pitched at Central Connecticut State University and is a great addition. Coach Cowart has scheduled several non-conference games with some very talented teams such as Western Alamance, Central Davidson, Southwestern Randolph and Ledford. The Lady Falcons are a veteran team with seven seniors and should be one of the top teams in the area if not the state this year.

  1. The Lady Falcons opened with a win over Smith. Blair Bauer was the winning pitcher. Good to see Blair back on the mound again.
They play Grimsley tonight at SEG and Southern Alamance on Friday.
