College Baseball Finals – Guilford 8-4, Immaculata 10-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Rookie Lou Trosch threw six scoreless innings in Guilford College’s 4-0 baseball win over visiting Immaculata College Tuesday. The victory salvaged a split with the Mighty Macs after Immaculata took game one, 10-8.

Trosch (2-0) yielded six hits, fanned three and did not walk a batter in lowering his team-leading earned run average to 0.52. Immaculata threatened in the second after two-out singles by T.J. Warner and Alex Kobylinski put runners on second and third. Trosch retired Brandon Seibert on a line drive to center to end the threat. Trosch gave way to Ryan Lindsay, who closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning.

Guilford’s Casey Mann went two-for-three with a run-scoring triple in the third that broke a scoreless tie. Justin Pittman also had two hits, including an RBI double in the Quakers’ two-run fourth inning.

Warner had two of the Mighty Macs’ six hits in game two. Richard Cusic (0-1) took the complete-game loss after saving the opener with a scoreless seventh.
Matthew Hardy was two-for -three in game one and keyed Immaculata’s four-run first inning with a two-run homer. The Mighty Macs chased Guilford starter Eric Backus (1-1) in the first and upped their lead to 6-0 with single runs in the second and third frames against reliever Travis Starbuck.

Four third-inning runs drew the Quakers (9-5) to within 6-4, but Immaculata took advantage of two Guilford errors and scored four unearned runs in the fifth inning. The Quakers answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, fueled by Pittman’s two-run double. Guilford put runners on in both the sixth and seventh frames, but Immaculata worked around them with double plays in both innings. The Mighty Macs turned three twin-killings in their season opener.

Elijah Vottero and Matthew Boldin joined Hardy with two hits in the first game for Immaculata. Boldin also stole two bases and had three RBI. Andrew Dietrich pitched into the fifth inning and earned the victory.

Guilford outhit Immaculata in game one, 12-9. Mann, Zach Montalbano, Gabe Mirabelli and Kent Peterson all had two hits for the Quakers.

Guilford visits Piedmont College Wednesday (3/7) and Thursday (3/8) in two games rescheduled from the season-opening weekend in February.
