College Track and Field News – Guilford’s Smith Named Student-Athlete of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Johnathan Smith (Conyers, Ga./Salem) collected his third Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week Award of the year Tuesday. The honor is presented weekly by the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Johnathan Smith '14

Smith, a sprinter, placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.80 at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships Mar. 10 in Grinnell, Iowa. His time of 6.76 seconds in the preliminary heat on Mar. 9 broke his own school record and was second-fastest in NCAA Division III this season. Smith became Guilford’s first indoor track and field All-American by virtue of his top-eight finish at the national championship meet.

After his record-setting performance in the 60-meter dash and outstanding effort at the NCAA meet, Smith turns to the outdoor track season. He is the defending NCAA Division III runner-up in the 200-meter dash and finished sixth last year in the 100, which earned All-America honors in both events. He also won the 100 title and placed second in the 200 at the 2011 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.

Interim coach Danny Cash’s Quakers are back in action Mar. 16-17 at the Wake Forest Open in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among Guilford’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer awareness promotion, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
