Elon’s Johnston Garners SoCon Women’s Tennis Accolade

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon’s Jordan Johnston has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches March 5-11. Johnston finished the week a combined 5-1 singles and doubles competition as the Phoenix went 2-1 last week.

Elon dropped a 4-3 decision to Appalachian State on Tuesday, but rebounded to claim victories over Western Carolina (7-0) and Davidson (6-1). The Player of the Week selection is made by the conference office.

Johnston was a perfect 3-0 at the No. 1 singles position last week. The Snellville, Ga., native opened the week with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) victory over ASU’s Ellie Linsell. Johnston then picked up straight set wins over Western Carolina’s Megan McLinden (6-4, 6-1) and Davidson’s Stephanie Synn (6-1, 6-3).

Competing at No. 1 doubles with Frida Jansaker, the Elon pair dropped just their second match of the year, falling to ASU’s Linsell and Jennifer Ansari, 8-5. Johnston and Jansaker then came away with wins over Western Carolina’s McLinden and Ainhoa Iglesias Diaz (8-1) and Davidson’s Synn and Nisha Crouser (8-2).

Elon is now 11-4 during the spring season and holds a 2-1 record in league play.

The Phoenix returns to action on Sunday, March 18, at 12 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala., versus Samford.
