This is a good one, a real good one, from Tim Crothers at the Charlotte Observer and it tells the story of how Harrison Bryce Jordan Barnes got his names and how the young North Carolina Tar Heel got to where his is today; with the sure, but sturdy guidance of his mom…..
Barnes mom grew up in Mississippi and her family of 9 lived in a three-room shack with the outdoor restroom, known in most circles, as ‘The Outhouse’……Harrison’s mom left the woes of Mississippi and moved to Iowa to live with her brother, cause he needed an tax-exemption and then Ms. Barnes went on to Ames, Iowa and met Ron Harris, who was a basketball player for the Iowa State Cyclones….Ms. Barnes and Ron Harris had Harrison Barnes, but Harris took off and left Ms. Barnes to bring up Harrison on her own……Hence he was Harris’ son and that is about it for that name, but he did at least take his dad’s name with him…..Ms. Barnes used to sit back and watch all of the Chicago Bulls games before Harrison was born and she would tape the games and the Jordan highlight reels became Harrison Barnes cartoons, as he watched those as a young kid, instead of Buggs Bunny and Daffey Duck…..Harrison Barnes decided he was going to try and replicate every thing that Jordan did and he has come very close while in college….So you got Harrison, Jordan and the Barnes names(the Barnes name being that of his mom and mentor) and the Bryce name is something Harrison’s mom found in the dictionary while searching for something real unique, to make her young son stand out and it did and that has continued to be case, all the way to the NCAA Sweet 16……
