College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 13, Va. Wesleyan 6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – E’leyna Garcia scored four goals and two assists in Guilford College’s 13-6 women’s lacrosse victory over visiting Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday.

The victory marked the Quakers’ (6-2, 3-0 ODAC) first win over their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rivals since 1999 and ended the Marlins’ (3-7, 1-2 ODAC) 11-game winning streak versus Guilford.

The Quakers scored the game’s first four goals and opened a 7-2 halftime lead. Garcia had two goals and two assists at the break. She started and ended a 7-0 Guilford run that spanned both halves and gave the hosts a 12-2 edge.

Virginia Wesleyan rallied and scored the next four goals, three by Natalie Belva. Guilford’s Summer Frazier stopped the spurt by netting her third goal of the game with 1:30 left.

Eleanora Keene and Lily Colley also scored three times for the Quakers. Keene also picked up a game-high six draw controls, which helped the Quakers to a 13-8 edge in draws. Guilford also outshot the Marlins, 30-18, and got 12 saves from goaltender Liza Mettler.

Belva’s four goals paced Virginia Wesleyan. Michelle Mace made four saves in goal before giving way to Brittany Macknew early in the second half. Macknew made three stops and yielded two goals in just under 26 minutes.

Guilford entertains Christopher Newport University Sunday (3/25) at 1:00 p.m.
