HPU at Charleston Southern Halted by Rain in the Sixth Inning

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The High Point University baseball team led Charleston Southern 10-9 in the top of the sixth inning when the game was called due to rain. HPU has a runner on first in the top of the sixth against CSU pitcher Levi Mauldin. The game will be resumed on Sunday at noon with the series finale to be played immediately after.

Joe Goodman is on the mound for the Panthers. He recorded the last two outs of the fifth inning.

HPU and Charleston Southern each scored two runs in the first inning. The Panthers led by as many as seven runs in the game but the Buccs cut the lead to one with four runs in the fifth.

Mike Miedzianowski reached on an error to start the second inning. He hit a ball to leftfield that Harrison Wilkins dropped, allowing Miedzianowski to get to second base. After Dane McDermott was hit by a pitch Sal Pezzino drove in both runners with a double to right field. High Point extended its lead to 7-2 when Ryan Retz doubled to score Pezzino and then came in to score on a wild pitch.

Devin Bujnovsky led off the fourth with a single to extend his hit streak to 10 games. Ryne Rush and Josh Spano followed with back-to-back singles and all three runners came in to score, making it a 10-5 game.

Charleston Southern cut in to the lead with a four-run fifth inning. HPU starter Matt Armstead started the frame, hitting a batter and giving up a double. He was relieved by Jordan Foster, who also didn’t get an out in the inning. Zach Hagaman singled in both runners and Brian Welch walked before Foster was taken out of the game. Will Resnik also gave up a hit and a walk, getting one out. Joe Goodman came out of the pen and ended the Buccaneer rally, getting Walt Quattlebaum to line in to a double play. HPU led 10-9 at the end of five innings when the rain delay began.

Armstead went four innings, his shortest start of the season, allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits. He walked one batter. Foster and Resnik were responsible for one run each.

Willie Medina stole four bases in the game, setting the HPU single-game record. The previous record was three which was accomplished by 11 different Panthers. The last HPU player to steal three bases was Dane McDermott against Elon on Feb. 29, 2012. As a team HPU stole nine bases, another single-game record.

Retz is 3-4 with two RBI and a run scored and Rush is 3-4 with a run scored. McDermott and Pezzino have two RBI each and Wilson has scored two runs.
