Elon Women’s Tennis Registers 6-1 Win Over Georgia Southern

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team improved to 4-2 in Southern Conference play on Monday, March 26, as the Phoenix registered a 6-1 victory over the Georgia Southern Lady Eagles at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Elon improves to 13-5 (4-2 SoCon) with the win, while Georgia Southern falls to 4-12 (1-5 SoCon) with the setback.

The Phoenix quickly dispatched the Lady Eagles in doubles to take a 1-0 match lead. Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker improved to 15-2 on the year after handing Natalie Maffett and Caitlin Kitchen an 8-3 decision, clinching the doubles victory. At No. 2, rookies Barbora Lazarova and Maria Camara Ruiz claimed a quick 8-1 victory over Cameron Williams and Scottie French to help the Phoenix jump out to the early advantage.

Lazarova gave the Phoenix a 2-0 lead at No. 2 singles after topping Georgia Southern’s Caitlin Kitchen, 6-1, 6-2.

The Phoenix took a 3-0 match lead after the conclusion of No. 3 singles, as Jansaker registered a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Lady Eagles’ Allison Beeler. Jansaker has won 12 of her last 13 matches.

Camara Ruiz clinched the match victory for the Phoenix at No. 5 singles, topping GSU’s Alessandra Dzuba in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to give Elon a 4-0 edge.

Viviana Stavreva put the maroon and gold ahead 5-0 after claiming a win in straight sets over Georgia Southern’s Cameron Williams. Stavreva won 6-2 in the first set and came from two points down in the second set for a 6-4 victory.

Briana Berne was victorious for the Phoenix at No. 6 singles, as the junior topped the Lady Eagles’ Natalie Maffett, 7-5, 6-2.

Elon returns to action at home on Saturday, March 31, when the Phoenix welcomes Furman to campus for an 11 a.m. match at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
