HPU’s Wallingford Named NLC Defensive Player of the Week

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point University junior Anna Wallingford has been named National Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. The goalie made seven saves in HPU’s 13-10 win over Oregon on Saturday.

Wallingford faced 17 shots on net and stopped seven, holding the Ducks to 10 goals after they averaged 14.7 goals in their previous three games. Wallingford made a key save with under two minutes remaining and HPU up by just one goal at the time, preserving the lead.

The win was Wallingford’s third in a row and she improved to 5-2 on the season. She has a 12.34 goals against average and .413 save percentage with 52 stops on the season.

Wallingford was previously named NLC Defensive Player of the Week after making 14 saves in a 22-14 win over UC Davis on Feb. 29 to earn her first win of the season.

This week’s NLC Offensive Player of the Week is Ann Fucigna from Davidson and the Newcomer of the Week is Morgan Becker from Liberty.

The Panthers have won three straight and host Jacksonville this Friday at 7 p.m. at Vert Stadium. Both teams are 6-2 heading into Friday’s game.
