Greensboro College Softball Splits With Ferrum

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) — The Greensboro College softball team beat Ferrum, 6-3, in game one of a Thursday night doubleheader but lost the nightcap 2-1. The Pride are now 15-11 overall and 6-2 in the USA South, setting up a key showdown with Christopher Newport at home on Saturday.
The Pride struck for three in the first and held off a late Panther charge with one in the sixth and two in the seventh for the victory in game one.

Jackie Nicholson and Heather Nellis started the game off with RBI base hits in the first inning. Nellis followed up her two run double in the first with an RBI single in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-1.

Ferrum narrowed the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth before Kanisha Fogg came through with a two run single to bring the score to 6-3.

Greensboro finished the game with 11 hits, as Nellis, Hayley Hicks, Brittany Teer and Megan Cater each contributed two apiece. Kelsey Sanfilippo earned the win with 4.1 innings and seven strikeouts. Nicholson finished the final 2.2 innings.

Ferrum took the early lead in the night cap, nabbing a single run in the third inning. Holly Jones provided the equalizer, sending Nellis home on a single in the top of the fifth.

The Panthers took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, at 2-1, and sent Greensboro down in order in the seventh.

Jones recorded the only hit of the second game for The Pride. Hannah Pennell tossed a complete game four hitter with ten strikeouts, but suffered the loss with two runs allowed.

Greensboro will host Christopher Newport on Saturday at UNC-Greensboro in a battle of conference leading teams. The doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
