College Softball Finals – Guilford 6-6, Methodist 3-7

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Morgan Andrews went three-for-four with three RBI and a home run in Guilford’s 6-3 softball win over Methodist University. The visiting Monarchs (23-10) hung on for a 7-6 victory in the nightcap, which earned a split of Sunday’s nonconference doubleheader at Haworth Field.

The Quakers (12-12) scored in each of the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead before the Monarchs tallied three two-out runs in the fourth and made it a 4-3 game. Andrews, who already had an RBI single in the second, jacked her team-leading third homer of the season in the bottom of the fourth, restoring a 6-3 Guilford edge.

The Quakers’ Jessica Burcham (5-5) yielded eight hits and three runs in a complete-game effort that included three strikeouts. Andrews and Ashley Boteler both finished with three hits in Guilford’s 12-hit performance.

Megan Lee had two of Methodist’s eight hits and Jordan Adams knocked in two runs in the fourth. Jessica Farmer (11-6) took the opening-game loss.
Farmer picked up her fourth save of the season in game two. She relieved Kayla Malone (11-4) with one out in the seventh after Boteler doubled high off the left-centerfield fence to put runners on second and third. Autumn Yoder’s RB I grounder made it a 7-6 game before Malone induced a game-ending comebacker from Cynthia Hayes that left Boteler’s tying run on third.

The Monarchs converted three Guilford errors into six runs (one earned) and took a 6-0 lead in the third inning. Adams delivered a two-run double in the second and Lee followed with an RBI single. Lee, Adams and Lindsay Tippett each had two hits for Methodist. Sarah Stapleton was one-for-three with two RBI.

Sarah Cutright pulled Guilford to within 7-4 with a two-run homer in the fifth. Boteler and Kimberly Keys both added two hits.

Guilford hosts North Carolina Wesleyan College Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in a contest rescheduled from Feb. 29.
