Silverman Earns Second Player of the Week Award

ELON, N.C. – Elon men’s tennis standout Cameron Silverman was named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season after posting a perfect 6-0 record for the Phoenix last week. With three singles victories last week, the sophomore is now 8-0 in league play at number one singles and has won 11 of his last 12 matches.

Silverman’s three singles wins last week came in straight sets as he opened the week with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) victory over Appalachian State’s Alex Markov. The Mount Kisco, N.Y., native followed up that performance with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Furman’s Andrew Mello. Silverman closed the week with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Tinus Van Wyk of Wofford in Elon’s 6-1 victory.

In doubles action, Silverman also won all three of his matches, pairing with senior Eric Turner for an 8-3 win against App State. Silverman then teamed with rookie Stefan Fortmann for the first time this season and the duo recorded wins at Furman (8-2) and at Wofford (8-1).

Silverman will lead Elon in a crucial match against UNCG tomorrow afternoon at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The match will begin with doubles action at 2:30 p.m. With a win, the Phoenix will clinch a first-round bye in the upcoming league tournament.
