GC Softball Concludes Regular Season With Split Against Shenandoah

The Greensboro College softball team rebounded from a first game defeat to earn a doubleheader split with Shenandoah on Saturday. The Pride took a 2-0 setback in the opener before fighting back for a 6-3 victory in the second game.

Greensboro was no hit in the first game, as only three Pride players reached base. The Hornets scored the only two runs of the game on a two run home run in the sixth. Greensboro put a runner on in the seventh but was unable to convert.

Kelsey Sanfilippo suffered the loss in the circle despite a complete game effort. Sanfilippo allowed only one earned run and struck out four hitters.

The Pride put it all together in game two, scoring three runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth en route to the 6-3 win.

After Shenandoah scored first in the first inning, Brittany Evans put Greensboro on the board with the help of a Hornet error. Kelsey Burkett pushed the second run home with a sacrifice fly before Brittany Teer pushed the advantage to 3-1 with an RBI single down the left field line.

Burkett padded the lead in the fourth with a two run blast to left field that made the score 5-1 in favor of The Pride. Shenandoah narrowed the gap to 5-2 with one run in the sixth.

Teer concluded the scoring for Greensboro with an RBI triple in the bottom of the frame to take the lead back to 6-2. Hannah Pennell held off a Hornet threat in the seventh, giving up only one run to earn the complete game win.

The Pride finished the game with eight hits as Teer and Evans each picked up two apiece.

Saturday was the final home game for seven seniors. The 2012 senior class consists of Kanisha Fogg, Brittany Evans, Hayley Hicks, Rebecca Pink, Kelsey Burkett, Heather Nellis and Brittany Teer

With the split, Greensboro finishes the regular season at 19-17 overall and 10-8 in the USA South. The Pride will enter the conference tournament next weekend as the number five seed. Greensboro will face Methodist on Friday at 11 a.m. at Springwood Park in Burlington, NC.
