Carlyle’s Golden Goal Lifts GC Men’s Lacrosse Past Guilford in OT

Jaeger Carlyle’s goal 1:05 into the first overtime session gave The Pride men’s lacrosse team an 8-7 win over rival Guilford. After completing 60 minutes of regulation with a 7-7 tie, Skip Jakupi controlled the opening face-off in overtime. Greensboro called a quick timeout to draw up the game winning play that allowed Carlyle to find the back of the net.

The Pride held a 2-1 lead following one period of play behind goals by Thomas Brooks and Bill Blakely. Each team added two goals in the second with Brooks and Blakely again coming through for Greensboro.

The Quakers took their first lead of the game in the third period, coming out of the half with two goals to take a 5-4 advantage. Blakely netted a hat trick with 1:13 remaining in the frame to tie the game up at 5-5 with one period to play.

Blakely and Max Aiken each scored in the fourth, sandwiched around a Guilford goal, to give The Pride a 7-6 lead with 10:31 to go in the game. The Quakers would even the count with 4:05 left on the clock and neither team could break the tie down the stretch as the game went to overtime.

Jakupi and Carlyle took over from there to give Greensboro its fourth win in five games.

The Pride held advantages of 35-30 in shots and 19-17 in shots on goal. Both teams grabbed 23 ground balls while Greensboro won 13-18 face-off attempts.
