GC Softball Beats Methodist, 5-1, to Advance at USA South Tournament

The #5 seeded Greensboro College softball team used a 14-hit attack to beat #4 seed Methodist on Friday, 5-1 in the USA South Tournament opener. With the win, The Pride advance to Saturday’s 12 p.m. match-up with the winner of #1 Christopher Newport and #9 North Carolina Wesleyan.

Greensboro put two on the board in the third on an RBI single by Brittany Evans and fielder’s choice by Heather Nellis.

The Pride had already threatened in the second, leaving the bases loaded without a run. Greensboro looked to blow the game open in the fourth, loading the bases again, but with nothing to show.

The Pride finally broke through again in the fifth with three runs to push the lead to 5-0. Hayley Hicks, Kelsey Burkett and Reihle Kash all provided RBI base hits.

Methodist would record its only run of the afternoon on the final play of the game.

Leading the offense was Brittany Teer with three hits. Contributing two hits apiece were Evans, Hicks, Burkett and Jackie Nicholson.

Kelsey Sanfilippo started the game and tossed 3.1 shut out innings. Hannah Pennell worked the final 3.2 to earn the victory in relief.

Greensboro is now 21-17 on the season.
