College Men’s Track & Field News – Guilford College Fifth After First Day of ODAC Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va. – David Cason (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in Friday’s opening day of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Track and Field Championships at Lynchburg College. Cason shattered the Guilford and meet standards with a time of nine minutes, 28.13 seconds. He finished over four seconds in front of Lynchburg’s Daniel Cutright, the former meet record holder, in the 13-man race.

Cason’s effort helped Guilford to fifth place after six scoring events Friday with 15 points. Host Lynchburg College has a commanding lead in the seven-team field with 90 points.

The Quakers’ Johnathan Smith (Conyers, Ga./Salem), the top-ranked sprinter in NCAA Division III, posted the best 100-meter qualifying time Friday with a meet-record 10.72 seconds. Teammate C.J. Green will join Smith, the defending 100 champion, in Saturday’s final after clocking a personal-best 11.02-second time that ranked third among 23 sprinters Friday.

Smith turned in the day’s fourth-fastest 200 time, 22.62 seconds, good enough to qualify for Saturday’s final. He placed second in NCAA Division III in the event last season.

Guilford junior Mike Williams finished sixth in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 6.28 meters that stands fifth in school history.
The ODAC Championships conclude Saturday at Lynchburg.
