Salek Wins 400m as Elon Track and Field Finishes Fifth at SoCon Outdoors

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Elon track and field team finished the 2012 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 102 points for fifth. Amy Salek won the finals of the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.66 to become the first Elon champion in the event. The meet concluded today, April 22, at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

Bria Bell claimed fourth in the 400m after posting a 56.18. Bell and Salek finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the finals of the 200-meter dash. Bell bested Salek’s school record set yesterday with a new record time of 24.32, while Salek clocked a 24.48. Veronica Luedke finished eighth in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:10.38.

The 4×400-meter relay team, comprised of Bell, Luedke, Louise Prevoteau and Salek, earned second with a time of 3:48.46. The 4×100-meter relay team of Bell, Luedke, Prevoteau and Salek took fourth after posting a 46.75.

Prevoteau finished third in the heptathlon with a point total of 4,587. In the events contested today, the freshman took fourth in the long jump (16’10”), ninth in the javelin (72’9”) and first in the 800-meter run (2:16.63).

Allyson Oram claimed second in the 5,000-meter run with a time 17:31.11, while Morgan Denecke took ninth with an 18:16.34. Emily Tryon was the top Elon finisher in the 1,500-meter run after clocking a 4:50.22 for ninth.

Charlise Morgan turned in a great performance in the shot put with a heave of 44’ to take second. In the discus, Alyssa Girvin placed fourth with a throw of 136’11” and Jennifer Jarvis took eighth with a toss of 124’7”. Janelle McNeil finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 36’3.25.

Both Haley Laird and Jordan Lee reached a mark of 5’5” in the high jump for a new Elon record. Laird claimed fifth and Lee finished sixth.
