Western Guilford takes the ‘Lacrosse Wars’ to a whole new level with BIG WIN over ‘The Rival’ NWG Vikings last night at Mendenhall Middle

Last night at the Mendenhall Football Stadium, the WG Hornets made a push for the Conference Championship, when they knocked off the defending State 4-A Champs, the Northwest Guilford Vikings…..Big Win by the Hornets and the Vikings feeling it just a bit, without Jay Goldsmith this season….Doerr, Tingler, and team/crew battling, but Western won the War last night….

Western won the first game in overtime and also won last night 10-7 in another
thriller…

Game began with NW senior night ceremony.

NW had t-shirts prepared to get their boys fired up saying…”Put the (hornet) nest
to rest.” What Senior night and the t-shirt did was to get our guys more focused on
taking care of business and gain control the conference.

Game began with a WG goal followed by NW tally.
The quarter ended 1-1.
Almost the entire second quarter was dominated by WG going up 4-2. In the final 2
minutes, NW scored to make it 4-3. With 7 seconds left in the half, NW ran a play
but the clock did not run and the officials blew the play dead after several
seconds. NW was give a do over with 7 seconds and scored to tie the game at half.

WG came out in the second half and took contol of the game featuring some nice
teamwork and ball movement. Going up 9-5 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

NW fought to the end however WG Defense was too strong and closed the game with a
score of 10-7.

WG had 10 goals on 7 assists, Offensive top performers were Clay Carpenter
(Sophomore)- 4 goals, Matt Hodges – 3 goals, Greg Gehsmann – 2 goals and Robbie
Edmiston with 1 (Hodges, Gehsmann and Edmiston are all seniors).
The game was played at Mendenhall MS.
Outstanding D team anchored by Senior Goalie – Matt Siegmund and Senior D-poles
Jacob Rosenburg, Josh Thompson, Taylor Allen along with Freshman Kevin Gehsmann.

Hard fought game with both teams going all out for 48 minutes. Just about every ground ball and every drive was contested….
