College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 12, Va. Wesleyan 10 (ODAC Tournament quarterfinal)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Summer Frazier scored two of her game- and career-high six goals in overtime to help Guilford College past Virginia Wesleyan College, 12-10, Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament final.

The Quakers’ (11-6) school-record 11th win marked their first in the ODAC Tournament since 1992, their initial season in the league.

The contest featured nine ties and six lead changes. Neither team led by more than two goals.

Guilford broke the game’s final tie when Frazier scored with one second left in the first overtime period off a Sarah Bradburd assist. The Quakers’ Eleanora Keene won the draw to start the second overtime and Virginia Wesleyan (6-11) was forced to double the ball. After 90 seconds of possession, Guilford took a 12-10 lead when Katie Oliver slipped through the coverage and hit an open Frazier, who scored from close range with 1:32 left. Frazier captured the ensuing draw and Guilford successfully ran out the clock.

Frazier nearly won the game in regulation, but Marlins goalie Brittany Macknew made her 11th save of the game on a Frazier shot from close range with one second left.

Lily Colley scored four goals for Guilford and added two assists. Each of her tallies tied the score, including her final goal with 5:01 left in regulation. She also won three draw controls and caused two turnovers. E’leyna Garcia added two goals and an assist. Oliver finished with a game-high five ground balls and Keene picked up a game-best six draws. Liza Mettler made five saves in goal, including three on free-position shots.

Nikki Salyers paced Virginia Wesleyan with three goals and an assist. Mari Carmichael had a solid game on both ends of the field for the Marlins with two goals, two assists, two ground balls and three draw controls. She scored both goals in the first half, which helped the visitors to a 5-4 halftime lead. Virginia Wesleyan’s Courtney Shelton also contributed two goals and two assists. Teammate Natalie Belva added a goal and two helpers.

The Quakers advance to play top-seeded Washington and Lee University Wednesday (5/2) in Lexington, Va. The 16th-ranked Generals defeated Guilford, 16-4, April 18. The time of the Quakers’ first ODAC Tournament semifinal game since 1992 has not been determined.
