Elon’s Fifth Annual Phoenix Field Day Set for Saturday

ELON, N.C. – Elon University student-athletes and local youth are preparing for one of the year’s biggest days of fun on the school’s campus. Saturday, May 5, will mark the fifth annual Phoenix Field Day sponsored by the Elon Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Almost 100 children from seven different local organizations (Burlington Housing Authority, Alamance County YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, Junior Police Academy, C.H.A.M.P.S. Mentoring program, Alamance Girls in Motion and the Positive Attitudes Youth Center) are expected to participate in this year’s event. Couple that with nearly 100 Elon student-athletes and the day is bound to be full of fun and excitement.

An autograph session with both the Phoenix baseball and softball programs is planned for the morning, followed by the traditional giant game of duck-duck-goose. The day will continue at Hunt and Tucker Fields where the student-athletes will help guide the kids through some fun drills.

Instead of the customary campus tour, a scavenger hunt is planned to help the Phoenix Field Day participants learn about the Elon campus. The last stop will be at East Field for lunch and the opportunity to watch the maroon and gold softball team take on College of Charleston at 1 p.m.

Junior football player Blake Thompson is in charge of the event this year and is looking forward to more than just the day’s events.

“The biggest aspect of Phoenix Field Day that I love to see is the pure enjoyment on both the kids and student-athletes faces,” said Thompson. “The day will be a learning experience for everyone involved and comes with a genuine intent from the student-athletes to be a positive role model for the kids participating. As student-athletes, we know we can also learn form the kids. Most of all, we want to show that outside of athletics and school, our impact on the community is genuine, true and honest.”
