College Softball News – Guilford Pair Lands Second Team All-ODAC Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Sarah Cutright (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) and Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) garnered Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Softball honors Friday. Members of the league’s annual all-star teams were nominated and selected by ODAC head softball coaches based on performance in regular-season conference games.

Cutright, a junior infielder, hit a team-high .389 in 18 ODAC games, which ranked 14th in the league. Her 21 hits in conference games stood 11th in the ODAC and included three doubles and a homer. She also had 10 RBI and a .459 on-base percentage against league rivals. She split time at first and third base during the year and had six league games with at least two hits.

Overall, Cutright hit .304 with two homers, five doubles and 17 RBI in 40 starts. The team captain registered seven multiple-hit games and had five contests with at least two RBI. She enjoyed an eight-game hitting streak this season and went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI in Guilford’s 9-1 win over league-rival Emory & Henry College Mar. 28. She also had three hits, three RBI and scored a career-high four runs in the Quakers’ Apr. 14 ODAC victory at Sweet Briar College. Cutright is a career .321 hitter and ranks among the Quakers’ career leaders in homers (7, 7th), runs (71, 8th) and RBI (59, 9th). She has been hit by a pitch 11 times in her career, a school record.

Hayes, a sophomore, usually led off and played second base for Guilford. In 14 league games, she batted .341 with 11 runs scored and four stolen bases, both team highs. Hayes had a 10-game hitting streak against ODAC rivals and also hit a home run. Her four steals in league games ranked eighth in the conference.

Hayes hit .339 for the year in 34 games and led the Quakers with eight stolen bases in nine chances. She stands 12th among ODAC batting leaders and finished with six doubles among her 38 hits. She was hit by a pitch a school-record eight times this year. The left-handed hitter boasted 10 multi-hit games, including a four-hit effort Mar. 9 in a 7-1 win over Johnson State College. She had three hits in Guilford’s season-opening upset of nationally ranked Emory University Feb. 18 and also went 3-for-4 in a Feb. 22 win over Peace College. Hayes owns a .376 career batting average and ranks sixth in school history with 19 stolen bases.

The pair helped coach Dennis Shores’ Quakers to a 17-23 record (4-14 ODAC). They are among seven starters and 17 letterwinners scheduled to return next season.
