High Point Baseball Falls to Liberty on Friday in Lynchburg, Va.

LYNCHBURG, VA – The High Point University baseball team lost to Liberty, 5-0, on Friday at Worthington Stadium in Lynchburg, Va. Junior Devin Bujnovsky went 2-4 with a double and Sean Wilson picked up a hit for the sixth straight game.

Bujnovsky singled in the second inning and doubled in the ninth for his eighth multi-hit game of the season. Wilson extended his hit streak to six games with a single in the sixth inning. Willie Medina reached base twice in the game, with a bunt single in the third inning and reached on an error in the eighth.

Ryan Retz took his first loss in Big South play. He allowed four runs on seven hits in 5-1/3 innings with one strikeout. He is 6-3 on the season and 4-1 in league games.

Bryan Aanderud drove in Liberty’s first run with an RBI groundout in the first inning that scored Ian Parmley. Dalton Sype extended Liberty’s lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer in the second inning. Sype’s home run scored Trey Wimmer who reached on a two-out single.

Parmley scored his second run of the game in the fifth. He was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored on a groundout by Aanderud to push Liberty’s lead to 4-0.

John Maloney relieved Retz with one out and two runners on in the sixth inning. Maloney struck out Zack Haley and got Parmley to fly out to strand both runners.

Maloney ran in to trouble in the seventh inning after striking out the leadoff batter. Maloney walked Aanderud and gave up a double to Tyler Cox that extended Liberty’s lead to 5-0. Kyle Wigmore came out of the bullpen to face Alex Close and got the first baseman to groundout to Ryne Rush at third. Rush made a great play to tag Cox as he tried to advance to third and threw on to first for the double play to end the inning.

Wigmore threw 1-2/3 scoreless inning to finish the game for High Point. He didn’t allow a hit. Wigmore hasn’t allowed a hit in his last two appearances, which span three innings of work.

John Niggli picked up the win for Liberty. He pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Niggli is 8-2 on the season. Patrick Bankemper pitched the final two innings of the game for Liberty.

High Point dropped to 23-26 and 8-11 in Big South games. Liberty is 35-15 on the season with an 11-8 mark in the league.

The teams will meet again on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Worthington Stadium. Junior Jared Avidon will take the mound for the Panthers against the Flames’ junior righthander Brooks Roy.
