(HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL) — The defending National Champion Pride men’s golf team survived a rocky start to day two, making the cut with a 14th place ranking at the NCAA Division III Championship. A total of 41 teams came to the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL in hopes of winning the title, with that number dwindling to 15 heading into the final two days.
After opening the tournament on Tuesday with a sixth place round on the shorter, more forgiving Las Colinas Course, Greensboro moved over to the El Campeon Course on Wednesday.
The Pride stumbled out of the gate on Wednesday, and were in danger of missing the cut as the round came to a conclusion. However, a bogey on the 18th hole by St. Thomas (MN) allowed Greensboro to avoid a three team playoff for the 15th and final spot.
The Pride, who shot a +8 on Tuesday, are currently tied with Wittenburg (OH) at +26. Greensboro is only seven strokes away from being in the top three, but are 25 strokes behind tournament leading Oglethorpe.
Ben Nihart is the top individual performer at the midway point for The Pride at +7 (75-76). Nihart is followed by the trio of Nick Peoples (73-79), Scott Novicki (78-74) and Kirk Mitchell (75-77) at +8. Joshua Hudgins rounds out the group with a +10 (73-81).
