GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida shot a 1-under 287 Friday to jump from 10th to third, but Liberty maintained its lead after two rounds at the NCAA Greenbsoro Golf Regional at the Grandover Resort’s East Course. SMU’s Matt Schovee increased built on his day-one individual lead at the event, which is being hosted by UNCG and the Greensboro Sports Commission.
While the day-one leader struggled, Florida had Friday’s only round under par but is 10 strokes back of the Flames with a two-day total of 586. Liberty turned in a 5-over 293 for a two-day total of 576 but actually increased its lead as SMU, which remains in second place, turned in 6-over 294 to push its total to 582.
Another big mover Friday was Auburn, which leapt from eighth place into a tie for fourth at 588 (296-292). The Tigers’ Blayne Barber (73-68=141) had the day’s low round with a 4-under 68 to jump from a tie for 15th place into a tie for third with Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume (70-71=141), who is playing as an individual.
Schovee followed up Thursday’s 67 with a 2-under 70 to move to 7-under 137 for the tournament. Liberty’s Robert Karlsson had Friday’s second-best round with a 3-under 69 to push his two-round total to 139.
The third and final round of the tournament begins Saturday with the first group teeing off at 7:30 a.m. The low five teams and the top individual not on one of those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., from May 29-June 3.
