The UNC Tar Heels Baseball Team defeated the NC State Wolfpack Saturday Night at New Bridge Bank Park in front of 10,229 Fans. The game went scoreless through 11 innings. The Tar Heels scored 4 runs in the top of the 12th inning and the Wolfpack could not match the score.
If State had won, they would have faced Georgia Tech on Sunday. UNC had no Sunday option, they were going home no matter who won. Because they beat State, Miami will advance the the final game, playing George Tech Sunday at 12 Noon.
The ACC Baseball Tournament has not been as well attended as 2010, the holiday and economy were factors as the Grasshoppers put together an excellent ticket packet, not raising the prices from 2010. Saturday’s record breaking attendance helps folks forget the sparsely attended day games earlier in the week.
It was a great baseball outing for those who attended. Unlike Grasshopper games, this was purely about the game. There was very limited advertising and audience activities were driven by the fans and not scripted. Tonight, the cheers of “TAR” “HEEL”, “WOLF” “PACK”, “Let’s Go ….” were all led by the fans and instantaneous, although a few were cut short by the PA and meaningless music interruptions. At one point, I felt the PA staff starting playing the music over the fan’s cheers in order to throw water on any potential Heel/Pack arguements.
It was fun to hear the players and coaches talk on the field. One Wake Forrest player’s father could be heard (during Wake’s games) cheering his son’s team along. The “Un Huh Guy” attended several games with his chants, cheers and signs. Unfortunately, several Carolina fans could not handle his antics and used some extremely poor language skills in front of children. (The Police had to quiet the fan down due to his vulgar language.)
The ACC Baseball Championship Game will be played Sunday at Noon, Gates open at 11 AM. There are great tickets remaining, even if you just purchase a lawn seat for $7.
