Intra-League Roller Derby Bout With Star Wars Theme

Worlds will collide on Saturday, June 30th, at Greensboro’s Barber Park.

Two of Greensboro Roller Derby’s three league teams, The Battleground Betties and the Elm St. Nightmares, will face off in a Star Wars-themed bout titled “Roller Wars.”

Though it promises to be an action-packed game, “Roller Wars” will not just feature fast-paced, hard-hitting skating. There will also be a halftime disco dance party. Fans are invited to dress up, and members of the local chapters of the Rebel Legion and the 501st Legion (Vader’s Fist) – Star Wars fans who create detailed reproduction costumes – will be in attendance.

Modern, flat-track women’s roller derby is a fast-growing sport that is surging in popularity around the world. Players train hard, strategies are constantly evolving, and the hits are completely real, but the sport looks back affectionately at its campy roots with punning nicknames and themed bouts.
