UNCG SB: Horsmon, Emeterio Named to NCCSIA All-State Team

DURHAM, N.C. – UNCG outfielder Alex Emeterio and infielder Eileen Horsmon were named to the 2012 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association University Division All-State Team, the NCCSIA announced Friday.

Emeterio and Horsmon were each repeat selections to the 12-member squad. Horsmon earned a spot on the 2010 team, while Emeterio was also selected in 2010 and 2011.

Emeterio, who just completed her senior season for the Spartans, played five different positions in 2012, seeing action at first base, third base and all three outfield spots to earn the utility spot on the all-state team. She hit a team-best .336 on the year, starting 50 games. She had five doubles, two triples and four home runs among her team-best 51 hits and led UNCG with a .410 on-base percentage.

The Murrieta, Calif., native went 3-for-4 against College of Charleston at the Southern Conference Championship in her final contest in a Spartan uniform, giving her sole possession of UNCG’s career hits record with 230. Emeterio also wrapped up her career in the top 10 in school history in career runs, doubles, triples, RBI, at-bats and walks. She led the Spartans in batting average, hits and on-base percentage in each of her four years on the squad.

Horsmon, who just completed her junior season, hit .297 on the year, starting all 56 games at first base. The Dunkirk, Md., native led UNCG with 46 RBI, 10 doubles, two triples and a .564 slugging percentage and was second on the squad with 41 hits, 10 home runs, 18 walks and a .366 on-base percentage.

UNCG had three players with at least 10 homers for the first time in school history in 2012, as Horsmon and teammates Katelyn Bedwell and Heather Robb became the first trio to earn that distinction. Bedwell and Robb had 11 each.

Horsmon fell one RBI short of the school record with six against Samford on April 1, hitting her second career grand slam in the process. She also had a walk-off RBI single in a 6-5 win over Western Carolina on April 28. She finished the season in the top 10 in school history in career homers and slugging percentage.

UNCG went 22-34 overall and finished fourth in the SoCon with a 10-13 league record.
