Good friend of Greensboro Baseball headed to the Houston Astros in Carlos Lee trade

A good friend of Greensboro Baseball, Matt Dominguez, gone to the Houston Astros….

The Miami Marlins picked up 36 year-old Carlos Lee today and the Fish sent two young prospects to the Houston Astros as compensation for Lee in the trade….

Carlos Lee, the former Hickory Crawdad, to Miami and on to Houston in the trade goes former Greensboro Grasshoppers, Matt Dominguez(3B) and Rob Rasmussen(P)….Lee will be at first base for the Marlins….

from MLB.com:

To acquire Lee, Miami is parting with two high picks from recent Drafts. Dominguez was the Marlins’ 12th overall pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.

A third baseman out of Chatsworth High School near Los Angeles, Dominguez is regarded as a standout defensive player who has had his struggles at the plate. In 78 games with Triple-A New Orleans, the 23-year-old batted .234 with seven home runs and 46 RBIs in 78 games.

When the Marlins moved Hanley Ramirez to third base, it blocked Dominguez’s path to the big leagues.

Rasmussen, a 23-year-old lefty, was 4-7 with a 3.90 ERA in 16 starts at Class A Jupiter. He was recently promoted to Double-A.

*****As we mentioned above, Matt Dominguez was a good friend of Greensboro Baseball and the Greensboro Grasshoppers…Matt was here back around 2008 and we met his dad and family and they were great people….They loved this town….When they finished up here at the end of 2008, his dad wrote a letter to the web site thanking everyone in Greensboro for the way they had treated Matt and Matt’s family, during their stay here that Summer…..Matt had an older brother, that was playing for the Salem Avalanche, in the Carolina League that same Summer….Great people the Dominguez family, out of Chatsworth, California….At one time, Matt Dominguez was the heir-apparent at third base for the Miami Marlins…We wish Matt and his family the best, as they head on down the road…..*****

  1. Gabby Sanchez, even after homering in his last MLB game, was sent down to New Orleans (AAA) as a result of this deal.

  2. I think Gaby is getting a raw deal and I think Matt is getting a raw deal….Just my opinion and it appears that the Marlins are pushing the ‘panic button’ and this may work for the short-term….I remember calling games when Carlos Lee was playing for the Hickory Crawdads back in 1996 when Hickory was still with the White Sox organizaton…Lee has been around for a while…..
